Mictlan Series

“The Mictlan Series of paintings are derived  from a combination of Aztec mythology and a European practice of using bones for decorating chapels.”

“Aztec mythology has been a constant source of inspiration in my art work.

Mictlan was the Aztec underworld, ruled by its Lord Mictlantecuhtli and Lady Mictlancihuatl.

The Aztecs believed the bones are like seeds. Everything that dies goes into the earth and from the earth new life is born.

By contrast, I happened to come across a documentary about an unusual use of human remains in Europe from about 1460 to 1510.

Overcrowded cemeteries had to remove bones from graves to make room for new graves. The monks from that time began to decorate chapels with the bones. The result was a creative use of bones as design, that further inspired my paintings.”
