During his youth, Juan enjoyed the best of two worlds, experiencing simultaneously the rich and colorful culture of Mexico and the closely related American southwest culture, found in Texas . This mingling and converging of the two cultures proved to be a continuos influence on Hernández’ artwork.
After a period of painting independently and shaping his own opinions of art, Juan was accepted to Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas on a full scholarship in the Meadows School of Fine Arts, where he graduated in 1990 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree.
Juan was a visual art teacher at Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, in Dallas, Texas, where he taught painting and drawing, for 21 years.
